Swansea v Manchester Utd

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 13:30:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 08:37:46)

Defending, defending, it was all about defending for Swansea away to Southampton. They did it quite well as the match ended scoreless. Without Llorente and Sigurdsson their offence is suffering and I see no big changes for Swansea ahead of this game. Maybe it is time for their new signing Roque Mesa to play from the start.

Man United were excellent against a poor West Ham side. It was one way traffic and many of the United players demonstrated early season full form. Pogba for example, Lukaku of course and it was a happy, offensive United we saw at Old Trafford. They were more direct, there were so many more offensive intentions than last year.

Very likely away win.

Bournemouth v Watford

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 16:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 08:41:49)

It was almost ridiculous how Bournemouth dominated the ball possession against WBA, but to no avail. They were harmless on the day and WBA definitely deserved their win. J Defoe played the last half hour for Bournemouth and I expect him to play from the start in this match. S Francis risks missing this match.

When Watford are going forward they look very dangerous in the penalty area with many of their players going for goal and I can see them scoring quite a few goals following dead ball situations. The Liverpool defence were all over the place on several occasions against Watford (3-3).

I did not particularly miss the injured Troy Deeney, but he would have enjoyed playing against Liverpool at the weekend. D Janmaat, Pereyra and Kaboul suffered injuries against Liverpool and they will probably miss this match. The trio is working hard on their recovery programme.

I am closer to backing the home win.

Burnley v West Bromwich Albion

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 16:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 08:44:12)

With one man more on the pitch Burnley played a very strong first half, scoring three goals against Chelsea. They were 100% effective, but they were not in trouble at all in the first half. Chelsea improved vastly in the second half and all of a sudden Burnley had big problems against this reduced Chelsea side. Still Burnley picked up a sensational away 3-2 win and we are talking about a side almost without an away win last season. I have never seen their front man S Vokes so strong.

WBA do not have many new players to show off ahead of this season, but one of them, the Egyptian defender Hegazi, scored their winning goal against Bournemouth. If they decided to leave the ball possession to Bournemouth, or not, only coach Pulis can tell, but they were almost never in real trouble, so the tactics worked. No G McAuley this time either. G Barry has joined from Everton and surely, he is made for a club like WBA.

The draw, a score draw will be my call.

Leicester v Brighton

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 16:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 08:47:31)

So close to winning the match, in the lead with some ten minutes to go, and then end up losing it (3-4). It must have been tough for Leicester and their players at the Emirates vs Arsenal. Still you almost sensed that Leicester would lose when A Ramsey equalised for the home side. Their new striker Iheanacho only played some ten minutes in his first game in the Leicester shirt. Anyway, it was fun watching Leicester play again. D Drinkwatwer has a chance of coming back for this match.

I cannot say much much about Brighton. They had a game plan against Man City and it worked for an hour or so, but eventually there was a way through the Brighton wall for City and Brighton had to accept losing the match 0-2.

Brighton played an OK game against a superior opponent. A Knockaert entered the game for the final fifteen minutes and hopefully the key player will be fit to play from the start in this game. I Brown, striker, is injured and he has gone back to Chelsea. They have just signed the Club Brugge winger J Izquierdo for a record fee.

I do not approve of the odds on the home win, that is clear to me.

Liverpool v Crystal Palace

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 16:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 08:50:21)

To play a game at this top level there can never be a formality and although Liverpool won away to Hoffenheim 2-1 in midweek they have to be 100% focused on the return leg at Anfield next week. I think that coach Klopp will rest some of his leading players, but I do not know for sure. D Sturridge could be involved, but forget about Coutinho.

Last season Crystal Palace had a certain Sakho in their defence and they could have done with him at home to Huddersfield (0-3).

There is no pressure on de Boer’s Crystal Palace this time and maybe they will be able to play a stronger game this time. Too bad that they have lost the influential Zaha to an injury and he will miss a couple of games, starting with this one.

Not good odds on the home win.

Southampton v West Ham

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 16:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 08:52:21)

A 0-0 game again! Southampton drew quite a few 0-0 games last season and their fans were not happy with their coach Puel. Now another 0-0 draw with Pellegrino as their manager. The Southampton fans were of course displeased with their score less game against Swansea, but the general opinion is that the Saints played more attractive, more offensive fooball against Swansea than for most of the last season. M Lemina was an unused substitute.

How poor were West Ham against Man United? It is difficult to say, as United were in total control of the game from start to finish. I recall two big chances for the Hammers, but De Gea kept a clean sheet.

Lanzini and Kouyate will not make it for this game, but could be that A Cresswell will be fit to play from the start. The influential M Antonio is also expected back from injury.

I would say, the pressure is already on Pellegrino and the home side has to win this game or at least produce some goals.

Both teams on the score sheet.

Wolves v Cardiff

FBENG Championship > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 16:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:44:19)

Early season final, as both sides are on maximum points after three rounds of Championship football. Wolves are the better side, in my opinion, but Cardiff are coached by N Warnock, the master of the Championship.

Wolves have defeated Middlesbrough, Derby and Hull and their achievement so far cannot be beaten. They have quite simply been outstanding so far in this league. You will understand that coach Nuno has strong group of players when a top striker like I Cavaleiro has started the last two games from the bench. H Costa, their most dangerous player last season, has yet to play for Wolves this season.

Cardiff defeated Sheffield Utd earlier this week and they outclassed Villa 3-0 a week ago and I am not for one minute saying that it will be easy for Wolves tomorrow.

Backing the home win.

Juventus v Cagliari

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 18:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:10:22)

The Milan clubs have new owners, new funds and they will get stronger this season, Napoli are always worth respect, but there is no doubt in my mind, Juventus will win the title again. There may be some kind of hang over after their big loss against Real Madrid in the Champions League final, but they will get over it.

Bonucci and Dani Alves have left the club and Lemina as well, but Bernadeschi, Douglas Costa and De Sciglio have joined Juventus. D Alves was a prominent figure in the Champions League, but he did not shine in Serie A. Bonucci will be missed of course, but he did not always play last season.

Douglas and Rugani will probably get the nod for this game instead of Cuadrado and Benatia, De Sciglio, who was unlucky in the Super cup (2-3 vs Lazio), will probably start again and Douglas, Dybala, Mandzukic and Higuain will do the attacking job. Now Matuidi, from PSG, has also joined Juventus.

Cagliari relied on their strength in their home games last season. They need many home wins also this season and I cannot say that they in any way look better than last season. Borriello is their front man again, Sau and J Pedro are still there and their set of new players look pretty much to be on the same level as those who have left the club. Cigarini and Andreolli are two of their new signings. Cragno will be their keeper and their squad is perfectly fit.

Home winner.

Celta Vigo v Real Sociedad

FBSPA Primera División > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 18:15:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:40:04)

In my opinion Celta have impressed more than Real in their pre season fixtures and I will back the home win.

Celta have a new coach and players like Jozabed, Lobotka and Maxi Gomez have joined the club. Jozabed and Wass dominated their midfield in their last preparation game, vs Roma, a game that Celta won 4-1. Unfortunately they lost their striker J Guidetti to an injury and he will be missing for a while. Maxi Gomez will be their lone striker and he is not the Serie A veteran. No it is a young Uruguayan striker with a proven scoring record and what I have seen from him, he is better than the injured Guidetti. P Sisto, their speedy winger, scored twice against Roma and Aspas is always scoring, is he not?

Januzaj is now a Real player and the defender D Llorente as well. Their key players have remained at the club, but Granero, Zaldua and Bergara have left. On their injury list ahead of this match we will find R Pardo, C Martinez, Inigo Martinez and Zubeldia. Carlos Vela will leave for USA in January 2018, but he is supposed to start for Real in this game alongside Januzaj and W Jose in their front line.

Backing Celta, but I do not think they will win to nil. Both teams on the score sheet in other words.

Stoke v Arsenal

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 18:30:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 08:58:49)

Not much separated the two teams, but Stoke went down 0-1 away to Everton. Much like last season when Stoke continually lost so called close encounters.

Shaqiri could have/should have scored in the dying minutes of the game. Chopou-Moting started the match on the bench, but K Zouma played from the start in the Stoke defence. They have offloaded Joselu to Newcastle, but Jese, forward as well, has joined from PSG. Jese, once with a fantastic future.

Without the suspended Koscielny Arsenal were very vulnerable in the air and Leicester looked extremely dangerous every time they had a free kick or a corner kick. Now Koscielny will be suspended again for this match and rest assured that Stoke will see to it that high balls will be sent into the Arsenal penalty area. In that case they need to play with Peter Crouch from the start.

Without the injured A Sanchez Arsenal scored four goals against Leicester and once again without Sanchez I dare say, Arsenal will score two goals at the Britannia Stadium tomorrow. Mustafi , Mertesacker and Coguelin are back in their squad.

1-2 or 2-2.

Troyes v Nantes

FBFRA Ligue 1 > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 20:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:37:14)

There is a good chance that Ranieri’s Nantes will be without points after three league games. They lost the first two and Ranieri has major squad problems to deal with. Four of his starting players, V Rongier, Y Bammou, D Carlos and A Kacaniklic suffered injuries in the first half at home to Marseille (0-1) and they all had to withdraw from the game. Talk about bad luck. They will all miss this game and their new defender N Pallois will sit out a suspension. L Dubois and K Djidji are injury doubts and and Ranieri does have much to cheer about.

Troyes picked up a sensational win away to Nice. I followed the game and it could go either way if you chose to believe the live reports. Their three important signings Deplagne, Vizcarrondo and Bellugou all played from the start.

Terrific odds on the home win, but they will drop, rest assured of that.

Backing Troyes.

Troyes

Verona v Napoli

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-19 20:45:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:14:04)

This Verona side are bound to struggle. They were strong at home last season (12-7-2), they came second in Serie B after Spal, but looking at their squad I cannot be too optimistic about their chances in this division.

They hope of course that Cerci will come alive again. I do too, but it has been a while since he played at a decent level. Pazzini, yes he is around, will also play in their front line and Buchel, Verde, Heurtaux and Zuculini are some of their new players. Cerci, Pazzini and Verde will play in their front line and both the new defenders Caceres and Heurtaux will start this game. Fossati could start in their midfield and Zuculini and Bianchetti are on their injury list.

Zapata, one of my favourites, has joined Napoli from Udinese and M Rui has come long from Roma. They look as awesome as last season and potentially they are as strong as Juventus. In the long run? That's another question. This game comes at an akward moment for Napoli as they are playing against Nice before and after this league game ( Champions League qualification). They won the first leg, their home fixture 2-0.

Napoli can afford to rotate and still win this fixture, but the odds on the away win are too short, in my opinion.

Huddersfield v Newcastle

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 14:30:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:03:13)

I had it in my mind, but I was too much of a coward, Huddersfield defeated Crystal Palace 3-0 and I did not cash in. Life goes on the odds on the Huddersfield win are pretty good also in this match. Now they have gone down. Their ex Montpellier striker Mounie scored twice against Crystal Palace and the Huddersfield faithful have a new hero, but their real hero is of course their coach Wagner.

You do not need enemies when you have friends like J Shelvey. Once again he destroyed everything for Newcastle against Tottenham and after his dismissal Newcastle had no real chance against Spurs (0-2). Up to his dismissal Newcastle were never in real trouble. I would never play with Shelvey again, if I was the Newcastle boss. Defender P Dummett and his colleague Lejeune were injured last week and they will miss this fixture. Joselu, striker, has joined from Stoke.

I am on the side of Huddersfield, but actually backing them? I do not know.

Tottenham v Chelsea

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 17:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:05:23)

Looks like a home winner and the Chelsea coach Conte will be feeling worse than ever.

Tottenham started with a new wing back against Newcastle, Walker-Peters, and he made a good impression. Son started on the bench but with him on the pitch in the second half Spurs scored their two goals against Newcastle. Harry Kane missed a couple of sitters and I am not exaggerating.

Down to ten men Chelsea played their worst first half ever at home to Burnley. They created absolutely nothing, but in all fairness they improved vastly in the second half, but it was too late (2-3 loss).

Hazard, Bakayoko, Fabregas and G Cahill will miss this match and Pedro is considered a major doubt. Hazard and Bakayoko are back in training, though and maybe Bakayoko has a chance.

Likely home win.

Atalanta v AS Roma

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 18:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:17:53)

I have to say, big price on the home win. It is true that Atalanta have lost some of their leading players, Kessie, Conti, Grassi and D’ Alessandro, but they have replaced they well be signing Ilicic, De Roon and Castagne. Atalanta have impressed hugely in some of their pre season games against very strong opponents. Papu Gomez has stayed put and he was joined by Ilicic and Petagna upfront in their last game. They also have the FC Copenhagen striker Cornelius as an alternative. It looks like another key player, Spinazzola, is on his way to be sold and he will not be involved in this game. That is a set back and a player called Gosens will replace him in the midfield

Di Francesco is now the Roma coach and it is a big step for the ex Sassuolo coach. Salah and Rudiger have left the club, among others, and Kolarov, Karsdorp, Gonalons and Under are some of their new players. Kolarov and Karsdorp are of course defenders and Under, who I know nothing about, is a striker from Instanbul, supposed to be very good. Florenzi , Emerson and Karsdorp are on the sidelines. Defrel, Dzeko and Perotti will play upfront in a 4-3-3 formation. Kolarov and Bruno Peres will be their wingbacks and De Rossi will probably be fit to start in their midfield alongside Strotman and Nainggolan.

Roma look very much OK, but I never could understand why they did not carry on with Spalletti as their coach? They lost their last friendly game 1-4 to Celta Vigo, but they did not come with their strongest side..

It is about the odds and I have to back the outsider. This thing with Spinazzola has set me back a bit.

Barcelona v Betis

FBSPA Primera División > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 20:15:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:42:32)

Barca are now missing Suarez and with Iniesta and Pique both doubtful starters should they be mega favourites in this match? I do not think so. They had no chance at all against Real Madrid in their recent two cup games. They were more or less embarrassed and how do their players feel at the moment? They are not used to be outclassed and they may need time and new players to enjoy their football again.

Betis will most likely start with some of their new signings. S Leon, their new front man, Guardado, the former PSV play maker, J Garcia, midfielder from Zenit and once Man City and Feddal in their defence. Boudebouz, another new singing, is considered an injury doubt.

Betis have nothing to lose and the odds? See for yourself, 27.00!

Crotone v AC Milan

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 20:45:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:21:39)

If I want to be in a good mood all I have to do is think of the Crotone come back last season. I was happy for their sake , but I was even more happy with the money I made during the last couple of weeks last season. Too bad for Crotone, as they have lost their striker Falcinelli, who scored thirteen goal for the club. Budimir is supposed to replace him this season and other new Crotone players are Izco, Kragl, Cabrera and Ajeti. Trotta and Budimir will start upfront in a 4-4-2 formation Another struggling season? I think so, yes.

Romagnoli, Biglia and Paletta will not be available for Milan. Their defence will entirely new with new boys Conti, Bonucci, Musacchio and R Rodriguez likely starting players. Kessie will start in their midfield alongside Montolivo and Bonaventura and Suso will be joined upfront by their new singings Andre Silva and Calhanoglou.

New look Milan? You bet with most likely seven new players in their starting line up. Milan are also playing in Europe at the moment and they certainly look more competitive than the home side.

Likely away win.

Inter Milan v Fiorentina

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 20:45:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:24:56)

While Inter will be stronger this season Fiorentina look severely weakened. Bernadeschi, Borja Valero, Ilicic, Rodriguez, Vecino,Tatarusanu, Saicedo and De Maio have all left the club. Late new signings are Simeone from Genoa, Eysseric from Nice, M Benassi from Torino and other new Fiorentina players are Hugo, B Gaspar, Veretout and Zekhnini.

What can I say? They have lost quality doing these deals and Chiesa will be suspended for this match. Coach Pioli is likely to start with Babacar as their front runner and he will probably be backed up Eysseric, Saponara and Benassi. Gaspar and V Hugo will make their defensive debuts.

Spalletti is the present Inter coach and two of his new players come from Fiorentina. B Valero and Vecino of course and the Sampdoria defender Skriniar is also a new Inter player. Icardi has been injured and he is available again. He will be backed up by Candreva, J Mario and Perisic with B Valero and Vecino defensive midfielders. Skriniar will play from the start in their defence, but Dalbert, another new defensive signing, will probably start on the bench.

Very likely home win.

Lazio v Spal

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 20:45:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:26:48)

No big changes in the Lazio squad, although they have lost their midfield ace L Biglia. Lucas Leiva has joined from Liverpool and he will start in the Lazio midfield instead of Biglia. Caicedo and Di Gennaro are now also Lazio players. Keita has remained at the club, but this weekend Felipe Anderson will join Immobile in their attacking line. Wallace, De Vrij and Radu are the likely defensive players in a 3-5-1-1 formation.

Spal won Serie B last season and like most teams they relied on their strength in their home games. Away from home Spal were 8-7-6. As many as half a dozen of their starting players in this game could be new signings. Paloschi,Viviani, Rizzo, Oikonomou, Felipe, Grassi and Floccari are all hoping for starting roles. Grassi will not make it, he is injured and Antenucci will be preferred to Floccari alongside Paloschi upfront. A couple of players from the Swedish Allsvenska have also joined the newcomer. Bonifazi, maybe their best defender last season, has joined Torino.

Hopeless odds on the home win, but what else to suggest.

Sampdoria v Benevento

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 20:45:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:28:59)

Three important offensive players, P Schick, B Fernandes and L Muriel have left Sampdoria along with their influential defender Skriniar.

Sounds tough? It is and Caprari, from Inter, will join their veteran striker Quagliarella in their front line. Murru is a new Sampdoria defender, G Ramirez is new in their midfield, but there is no doubt, Sampdoria look a bit weakened ahead of this season. Viviano is injured and Puggioni will be their goal keeper in this game.

Benevento will probably face their season in Serie A with three new defenders, Letizi, Costa and Di Chiara and in their midfield we will find Cataldi (Lazio) and D’Alessandro. Coda, the ex Salernitana striker, will join their front man Puscas. As many as six new players could play from the start for Benevento.

Home win I guess, but certain I am not.

Sassuolo v Genoa

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 20:45:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:31:40)

How will they manage without their popular coach Di Francesco? Sassuolo have appointed a very young coach, Bucchi, who is a debutant at this level.

Falcinielli, who scored so many goals for Crotone last season, is now a Sassuolo player, but they have sold his offensive colleague Defrel to Roma. Pellegrini has also left for Roma. Berardi is still their main striker and alongside him we will find Falcinell and, Politano.

Genoa have bought wisely, as Lapadula, Bertolacci and Zukanovic, among others, have joined the club. Well Lapadula and Bertolacci have returned to the club after their attempts to be successful at Milan. They have just sold their young offensive ace Simeone to Fiorentina. Close to a disaster, in my opinion.

Ntcham and a couple of others have left, but no big deal. It is Simeone who will be missed. Lapadula will be joined by G Pandev and probably L Rigoni in their attacking line. Izco is suspended this wee end.

I would pick the home win.

Bologna v Torino

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 20:45:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:33:41)

Pretty quiet on the Bologna front, but two pretty good players have joined the club. I am referring to Poli and the Palermo defender Gonzalaez. Sadiq, Viviani, Rizzo, Ferrari and Oikonomou have left. Destro will be leading their offensive line again and in this game he will be flanked by Di Francesco and Krejci. Verdi is struggling with an injury and that is why Di Francesco comes into the picture.

Mihajlovic’s Torino have been able to hang on to their offensive ace Belotti. Players have left the club, but I cannot say that I miss any of those players. Sirigu will for example replace Joe Hart in their goal. Three very good singings, in my opinion, are T Rincon, Berenguer and Bonifazi.

Boye will sit out a suspension and Berenguer will start together with I Falque and Ljajic who are all backing up Belotti. In their central defence we will find N’Koulou and Moretti. Baselli and Valdifiori will not be fit to play.

Torino underperformed away from home last season, but I will give them a chance in this season opener.

Backing Torino.

Udinese v Chievo

FBITA Serie A > Regular Season-17

2017-08-20 20:45:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:35:28)

So Zapata, their front man, has left Udinese, Felipe, Kums, Heurtaux and Badu as well. Badu did not always play last season and fact is, Zapata was also quite often on the sidelines. Udinese can cope, that is what I what want to say, and they have strengthened well by signing Bajic, Nuytinck, Lasagna and Pezzella.

Del Neri will start with De Paul, Lasagna and Thereau upfront and Pezzella will be one of their defenders. Danilo is suspended for this game and Perica, Widmwe and Samir are not fit to play. Behrami has come on from Watford.

Same successful Chievo coach, pretty much the same group of players are at his disposal plus Pucciarelli, the ex Empoli striker. OK, Izco, De Guzman and Floro Flores have left the club, but they can most certainly live without the trio. As Meggiorini is injured Pucciarelli will play alongside Inglese in their front line. Bastien or Castro in the middle of the park.

Chievo have also signed two good players from Cesena, Rodriguez and Garritano.

Two experienced coaches who will steer their clubs to safety also this season and I prefer the home win alternative.

Manchester City v Everton

FBENG Premier League > Regular Season-17

2017-08-21 21:00:00 (This report was created at 2017-08-18 09:08:22)

I do not think Man City can be stopped at the moment, but it does not mean that this poor price on the home win interests me. Solid, flawless, but not really brilliant, I would say about the City display against Brighton. They were patient for once and happy to keep a clean sheet. Gundogan, who has been injured for so long, is back in training.

G Sigurdsson is now an Everton player and should Everton be able to find a strong attacker they have a complete side, at least in my opinion. Wayne Rooney scored their winning goal last week, but he will not do in the long run. Everton have sent Gareth Barry to WBA and Barkley is on their injury list. S Ramirez was considered a doubt ahead of their Europa League game last night, but according to Koeman he will be available for this Monday game.

Very likely home win.

Analysed! Stats reveal true playing styles of the Premier League's top seven clubs

Everyone's a tactical expert these days – but the good folks at STATS can genuinely analyse players and teams unlike anybody else.

A lot of data tracking in football is static – that is, it doesn't necessarily evaluate movement, which is obviously quite important when it comes to making reasonable conclusions about tactics.

STATS measure data in 10 key areas: Maintenance, Build Up, Sustained Threat, Fast Tempo, Direct Play, Counter Attack, Crossing, High Press, Offensiveness and Possession. Together they help paint an accurate picture of any team's style. (Note: percentage points are relative to last season's Premier League averages.)

Fancy indeed – but more interestingly for you, here's how it actually applied to the Premier League big boys last season.

Arsenal

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/arsenal_stats.jpg?itok=Ie-t02t2

According to STATS data, Arsenal had the most Fast Tempo possessions in the Premier League last season (i.e. they played twice as quickly as the top-flight average). Unsurprisingly, they predominantly control possession in the opposition half with Build Up and a high level of Sustained Threat phases, while the Gunners are around the top-flight average for Maintenance – which implies they don’t look to control possession in the defensive half.

In a nutshell, here's the proof that it's all about control for Arsene Wenger, with little emphasis on a high press (unlike some of the clubs below).

Chelsea

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/chelsea_stats.jpg?itok=GPmRYjO2

No club in the Premier League achieves Sustained Threat like Chelsea do – the Blues were ranked No.1 for it last season, indicating their dominance in the final third. They were also top for Counter Attacking, which in turn means they're below the Premier League average for Direct Play (ranked 18th). Instead of attempting lots of long passes, they prefer to play up the pitch or on the break.

Everton

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/everton_stats.jpg?itok=15mUrcPn

Everton are close to representing the Premier League average for possession-based styles, and are ranked No.9 for Maintenance, Build Up and Sustained Threat.

The Toffees' Offensiveness value is the lowest of the top seven, and it'll be interesting to see how these values change with the signings that Ronald Koeman has made this summer. In this respect, a lot rests on Davy Klaassen's shoulders.

Liverpool

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/liverpool_stats.jpg?itok=MYqlTurJ

You already knew that Jurgen Klopp likes his players to run a bit – but here's the stone cold evidence. Liverpool were ranked No.1 for the High Press last year, slightly ahead of Manchester City but a surprising 8% clear of Tottenham.

The Reds are 6% below the Premier League average for Counter Attacks, however, implying they like to transition upfield through Maintenance, Build Up and Sustained Threat areas. Translated: they get the ball in the build-up zone and move it quickly. In his second full season, Klopp will be be hoping his methods are rewarded by consistent results.

Manchester City

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/man_city_stats.jpg?itok=GKqEzFz5

Pep Guardiola's aim is fairly clear: dominate play until opposition sides are squealing out safewords. Manchester City bragged the highest amounts of Maintenance and Build Up possessions in the Premier League last season, as they aimed to quickly move into the attacking half.

Guardiola's men were ranked No.2 for Counter Attacking too, helped by having arguably the Premier League's best player for that particular job in Kevin De Bruyne. With a fresh set of full-backs and Gabriel Jesus in for his first full campaign, what on earth might they be capable of in 2017/18?

Manchester United

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/man_united_stats.jpg?itok=SE2vY5dE

Believe it or not, Manchester United were ranked second for Fast Tempo play last season (cover your eyes, Louis, you didn't work on all those dossiers for this). United were also the second-highest-ranked team in the top seven for Direct Play (behind Everton), but really we're just going to blame Marouane Fellaini cameos for that – their game is more about building play and keeping control.

Under Jose Mourinho's tenure the Reds were ranked in the league's top five for Maintenance, Build Up and Sustained Threat. It's all quite balanced for Jose's mob.

Tottenham

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/spurs_stats.jpg?itok=RB0r36iV

Let's just say Mauricio Pochettino isn't keen on kicking it long – only one team ranked below Spurs for Direct Play in the Premier League in 2016/17. The Argentine does like his High Press, mind. Spurs use it far more than the average Premier League side: the fourth-most of any team, in fact.

Tottenham are above the division average for Build Up and Sustained Threat, but they're ranked sixth out of the top seven (above Everton again; poor Everton) for these playing styles. Are they a little less attacking than everyone thinks?

Every Premier League club's biggest strength and weakness in 2017/18

Arsenal

Strength: Probably the variety of options in attacking midfield. The anchoring position remains a little problematic, with nobody really sure whether Francis Coquelin is quite good enough to fill it, but further forward the range is deep and useful.

Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are the headliners, but Arsene Wenger can deploy any of Alex Iwobi, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to contrasting effect, with Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey also capable of moonlighting in similar areas. The emergence of 17-year-old Reiss Nelson is also intriguing, although probably not quite relevant to the season ahead.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/arsenal_41.jpg?itok=9_a84og8

Reiss Nelson: the teenager is one to watch

Weakness: Defensive stability. Arsenal’s pre-season has been full of experimentation. As recently as the Emirates Cup at the end of July, Arsene Wenger was still trialing a back-three system which employed Mohamed Elneny at its centre. It looked fashionable, it proved that Wenger is open to change, but it didn’t necessarily work. Shkodran Mustafi is still unavailable, so that perhaps confuses the issue, but the lack of a definitive pairing (or trio) so close to the season is a worry.

Bournemouth

Strength: Their forwards. Eddie Howe was accused of overpaying for Jermain Defoe but, while the reported salary and signing-on figures were startling for a player in his mid-30s, he does now have a broad range of abilities at the top of the pitch.

Josh King may not be a pure forward, but he provides many of the same functions; Benik Afobe brings a more traditional, physical threat; while Callum Wilson, though probably now third or fourth choice, is an underrated finisher. Adding Defoe obviously came at a price, but his arrival has Bournemouth looking far more dexterous.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/bourne_0.jpg?itok=u2twavpM

Josh King scored 16 in 36 matches for Bournemouth last season

Weakness: Still the defence. Versatile 22-year-old Nathan Ake and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic have arrived and will help, but the suspicion remains that Bournemouth’s players at the back just aren’t quite good enough. They’ve adapted to their new environment well enough to stay in the division, but they routinely look outmatched against the better sides.

Burnley

Strength: Their home form. Fortress Turf Moor became a bit of myth at the end of last season: Burnley have only won three Premier League games at home in 2017. Nevertheless, lovely traditional ground (with splendid views) though it may be, most teams don’t seem to enjoy their visit.

Admittedly, it’s only a relative strength. Burnley’s home form is good and important because their away performances - not just last year, but in their entire Premier League history - have been dreadful. If they're to see a third Premier League season in succession, their survival efforts will again have to begin at Turf Moor.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/burn.jpg?itok=6kkE1l7f

Sam Vokes applauds the fans who help make Turf Moor a relative fortress

Weakness: Midfielder Jack Cork has arrived from Swansea, but he’s not a signing which solves Sean Dyche’s biggest issue: his team don’t create enough chances. In fact, if their ‘possession, possession, move the ball wide’ method doesn’t succeed, they don’t seem to have an alternative approach.

Brighton

Strength: Individual quality, the type which wins Premier League points, is going to be an issue. Newly promoted teams have survived because of their cohesion before, but Anthony Knockaert will have to produce an excellent season if Brighton are to survive.

The good news is that he’s equipped for the challenge. A delicate but driven player with the ball at his feet, he’s capable of making the sort of impact that Riyad Mahrez did when he emerged from the Football League. It didn't work out for Knockaert with Leicester in 2014/15, but he's come on tremendously since then.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/brighton1.jpg?itok=sCYO7k0D

Anthony Knockaert has plenty of potential

Weakness: Goals. Where are they coming from? Glenn Murray scored 23 times last season and was front and centre of Brighton’s promotion push. On past evidence, he won’t come close to that number at the level above.

Chelsea

Strength: Antonio Conte’s iron-clad structure. Chelsea are not a flair team. They may possess players capable of picking locks and pirouetting through gaps, but that’s the velvet glove around their iron fist.

Last season, their success - after the B.C./A.D. crossover at the Emirates - was predicated on locking opponents in their own half for long periods and controlling the centre of the pitch. They stretch the field with their aggressive wing-backs and when defences spread themselves to meet that threat, Conte has the attacking players to exploit the gaps. They won the title last season because they were, by far, the most stable and well-coached team in the division and nobody should expect that to change.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/chelsea_25.jpg?itok=Y_QKqLgR

Chelsea were the best-coached team in the league last season

Weakness: No matter what anybody thinks about Diego Costa, Chelsea will certainly lose something with his departure. The goals and the combinations with Eden Hazard and Pedro will be an obvious miss, but so too his attitude. Costa is a snarling beast of a forward and Alvaro Morata isn’t in any way comparable.

That isn’t to say that he’s an inferior player - in fact, despite what we saw at the Community Shield, he might be a better finisher - but the change and subsequent disruption to the chemistry will be something which has to be overcome.

Crystal Palace

Strength: Their attacking trident. Somewhere between Tony Pulis, Neil Warnock and Alan Pardew, Palace became one of the most lopsided teams in the division. An ageing, porous defence was gradually masked by one of the more talented offensive trios in the country. Yes, there are imperfections to Wilfried Zaha, Christian Benteke and Andros Townsend – and perhaps they are overly suited to a counter-attacking approach – but they possess enough collective ability to be a problem for most defences.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/crystal_palace1.jpg?itok=u6vdUZaB

Christian Benteke's strength is, well, a strength

Weakness: Steve Mandanda’s Premier League career was short and baffling - and he’s now returned to France having played just nine games. It leaves Wayne Hennessey as Frank de Boer’s first-choice goalkeeper by default, which is a situation that must be remedied before the transfer window shuts.

Everton

Strength: Midfield. Looking back over Ronald Koeman’s managerial career, it’s evident that he prioritises the centre of the pitch. His teams typically protect their defence well and, though not necessarily particularly expressive, quickly become difficult to beat by frothing the middle-third waters.

Adding Netherlands international Davy Klaassen to a unit which already includes James McCarthy, Tom Davies, Morgan Schneiderlin – plus the returning Muhamed Besic – only serves to improve an already strong area.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/everton1.jpg?itok=cu8WS6AU

Davy Klaassen just adds to Everton's midfield options

Weakness: Wayne Rooney. Not because he’s a bad player, but because the attention he’ll draw will become draining extremely quickly. Rooney is well past his best, but remains a national point of interest; Koeman will be batting away questions about his ‘best role’ by the middle of September. It’s a deserved victory lap for the player and a nice story, but it’s a poor transfer which will serve little real purpose.

Huddersfield

Strength: A new partnership in midfield. Aaron Mooy was important to David Wagner last season, and so his permanent signing has been good business. It’s also interesting to note the club’s pursuit and capture of American midfielder Danny Williams from Reading. Williams was outstanding in the Championship play-off final, tracking the ball relentlessly. He will prove a valuable asset in the Premier League.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/hudd1.jpg?itok=Hi7pcDX0

Aaron Mooy (left) and Danny Williams (right) could be a key pairing for Huddersfield

Weakness: Goals are a problem here, too. Elias Kachunga looks a fine player, but is more of a winger than an outright forward, while Nahki Wells is (revealingly) available for transfer. Steve Mounie has joined from Montpellier and Laurent Depoitre has been rescued from Porto, so Wagner certainly acknowledges the weakness and has tried to fix it. Both players will need to transition smoothly if Huddersfield are to put enough points on the board to stay up.

Leicester

Strength: It should be the Jamie Vardy/Riyad Mahrez partnership, but the latter is expected to leave before the new season begins. Elsewhere, though, Leicester’s midfield looks strong.

Danny Drinkwater is subject of reported interest from Chelsea but should stay, while Wilfred Ndidi is one of the most talented young players in the division and should be recognised as such before the season’s over. Vicente Iborra has also been added from Sevilla, bringing some much-needed depth to the position.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/leics.jpg?itok=zD5OD3Wf

Wilfred Ndidi is 20 years old and improving

Weakness: The full-backs aren’t convincing. Harry Maguire has been signed and will bolster options beyond a creaking centre-back pairing, but Danny Simpson could be improved upon in an attacking sense and Christian Fuchs is now the wrong side of 30. The 20-year-old Ben Chilwell, one of England’s standouts in the European U21 Championship, has a chance of dislodging Fuchs before much longer.

Liverpool

Strength: It’s hard not to like the Mohamed Salah deal. He’s not the kind of player who delivers titles or trophies on his own, but his arrival doubles Liverpool’s supply of the attributes that previously only Sadio Mane provided. Jurgen Klopp needs those qualities, his team looked desperately blunt without them, and so Salah’s arrival will protect their attacking rhythm.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/liverpool1_0.jpg?itok=Wh5jp9M2

Mane and Salah offer pace, movement and attacking dynamism

Weakness: Seasons come and seasons go, but Liverpool never remedy their goalkeeping problem. Not to be unkind, but how many times must they learn this lesson before they address it?

Manchester City

Strength: Surely the forward line. Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Kevin De Bruyne, Silva (David), Silva (Bernardo), Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane. If Pep Guardiola can’t build a title-winning side from that attack, with the additional strengthening at full-back, he will inarguably have failed.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/man_citeh.jpg?itok=_WPF2aMg

Sergio Aguero is just one of City's numerous attacking options

Weakness: Doubts remain about the constitution of their midfield, and new goalkeeper Ederson’s true value. City may be intimidatingly strong, but they’re not without their gaps - and, amazingly, they will start the season still being slightly dependent on Yaya Toure and his 34-year-old legs.

Manchester United

Strength: Their attacking variation. Wayne Rooney has been jettisoned, but Jose Mourinho has a wealth of options at the top of the pitch. Romelu Lukaku has joined, of course, and will compete with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford for the centre-forward role. Behind that frontline, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata offer two contrasting forms of creation. The combinations aren’t quite endless, but that group should provide a solution to most problems.

And they’ll have to: even with Zlatan Ibrahimovic available to them for most of last season, United scored just 54 league goals - one fewer than Bournemouth. Given the level of investment, that should be a source of acute embarrassment for Mourinho.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/lukaku_15.jpg?itok=gU7rROC8

Lukaku should bring goals - but can he fill Zlatan's boots?

Weakness: Maybe the manager? Not tactically, of course, but Mourinho spent most of last season tripping over his own feet. His habit of castigating players in public and picking fights with rival managers, referees and the press seems to create more problems than he’s capable of solving.

The League Cup and Europa League were nice distractions, but Mourinho has brought a level of belligerence to Old Trafford which doesn’t seem sustainable.

Newcastle

Strengths: Rafael Benitez, unquestionably. He may have his detractors and certainly has a habit of rubbing some people up the wrong way, but Benitez is one of the game’s deepest thinkers and Newcastle will have to hope that he’s able to contort a thin squad in all manner of ways if they are to survive. He’s also politically savvy which, for obvious reasons, is a valuable trait in this part of the world.

image: https://images.cdn.fourfourtwo.com/sites/fourfourtwo.com/files/styles/inline-image/public/newca.jpg?itok=sGT8dzFt

Rafa Benitez has won the odd trophy or two in his career

Weakness: The ownership. Of course it is, because already the sound of broken promises is leaking out of Tyneside. The squad has not been strengthened as Benitez was evidently assured that it would be and, unless something dramatic happens between now and the end of August, they will approach their first season back in the Premier League from a very weak position.

Yes, there’s a danger which results from making too many alterations and attempting to buy security creates its own problems, but Newcastle have failed to find the middle ground between stick and twist.

Southampton

Strength: Their flexibility. Southampton are a great success story and that’s primarily because they’ve been able to see trouble ahead. Last season was underwhelming and Claude Puel’s football was often anaemic, but they have a habit of changing manager without breaking stride.

Mauricio Pellegrino will inherit some issues, not least the disconnect between the side’s midfield and its forwards, but why - given the recruitment team’s track record - would anyone doubt that this is the start of another growth phase?

Mauricio Pellegrino has some issues to solve

Weakness: Still, the absence of a true central playmaker is a concern. Manolo Gabbiadini is a fine finisher and he’s surrounded by some dynamic players, but the Italian needs a foil - or at least some support - and one hasn’t arrived (yet). Mario Lemina has joined from Juventus, for a club record fee no less, but his attributes will mainly be of value from deep and Pellegrino still needs an extra body at the top of the pitch.

Stoke

Strength: There isn't much to choose from, is there? There’s some background noise about the club potentially signing Andriy Yarmolenko, which would obviously be nice, but otherwise it’s been a quiet summer. The loss of Marko Arnautovic is also dispiriting - maybe descriptive, too, given that he chose to join a club who don’t outwardly offer anything particularly grand.

At a stretch, the defence remains relatively stable. Jack Butland is capable of becoming Joe Hart’s long-term successor in the national team, Glen Johnson, Erik Pieters and Ryan Shawcross all return, while it looks like Bruno Martins Indi is set to sign a permanent deal this month.

Jack Butland is a Stoke positive

Weakness: The same again: all the weaknesses they had are worryingly familiar. Mark Hughes’ midfield has needed refreshment for several seasons and Darren Fletcher doesn’t offer that new life, while the lack of goals in the Premier League last year was troubling. Peter Crouch was the club’s top-scorer in 2016/17 and there’s nobody in the current squad who looks capable of reaching double figures - not even new signing Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

Swansea

Strength: Gylfi Sigurdsson will be a huge loss, but Spanish midfielder Roque Mesa is an interesting signing and, in Fernando Llorente, Alfie Mawson, Martin Olsson and Ki Sung-yueng, Swansea have retained some of their most important parts. The club have also added support in a few areas: Tammy Abraham bears enough comparison with Llorente to be considered a genuine back-up, which is an important development.

Perhaps, though, Paul Clement is their real strength. He certainly blended some necessary pragmatism into the club’s ideals upon arrival and, while retaining most of its aesthetics, the native style wasn’t quite as naive under his watch. Clement can be capable of mishaps - the game of many, many crosses against Middlesbrough last season being one - so his reign is cause for cautious rather than conclusive optimism.

Paul Clement got a lot right at Swansea in the second half of last season

Weakness: Jordi Amat has left on loan and Federico Fernandez didn’t have a good season last year. Swansea needed to upgrade at centre-back and their failure to do that is a little baffling. Similarly, while Kyle Naughton played his part in the survival effort, there are better full-backs around.

Only Hull (80) conceded more goals than Swansea (70) in the Premier League last season, so the defence is still a major concern.

Tottenham

Strength: The first XI. If football was solely an 11-player sport, Tottenham would be considered among the title favourites. They’re talented, settled and have quality in every area. The Jan Vertonghen/Toby Alderweireld pairing is the best centre-back combination in the country, Mous(s)a Dembele and Victor Wanyama comprise probably the most balanced deep-lying midfield pairing, while Harry Kane is obviously an elite forward.

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld: a dynamic duo

Weakness: The obvious: Tottenham have done nothing in the transfer window. The reasonable elements within their fanbase concede that the first team doesn’t require much investment (and that improving upon it under the current wage structure would be extremely difficult). However, the failure - or reluctance - to add any sort of depth will likely prove a serious error of judgement.

Watford

Strength: The new midfield, formed (at least in part) from Nathaniel Chalobah and Will Hughes, should be very productive. Those two players in particular will complement each other nicely and, because of their shared technical ability, should improve under Marco Silva. Pre-season predictions are always idealised and so - yes - Chalobah and Hughes could encounter growing pains at a new level, but for now both look like smart additions.

Watford's Hughes (left) and Chalobah in their England U21 days

Weakness: Still the transience. Watford exist season-to-season and in both of their last two Premier League campaigns, have effectively signed off when they’ve assumed themselves safe. Silva was presumably given some assurances over the stability of his job, so maybe he’ll be able to cure the culture a bit.

He’ll need to. Nobody seems to have noticed, but Watford finished 17th last season and were very fortunate that Sunderland, Middlesbrough and pre-Silva Hull were so hopeless.

West Brom

Strength: Laugh away, but it’s Tony Pulis’s style of football. He may attract negative assumptions by the dozen, but how many other managers could take such an ordinary group of footballers - because, sorry, but that’s what West Brom are - and guarantee them Premier League safety? It’s not exciting, it’s not something which fires supporters’ enthusiasm, but it is impressive.

Tony Pulis: no crowd-pleaser, but knows what he's doing

Add Jay Rodriguez to the ‘strength’ column, too: a cultured footballer who’s good in the air and will prove to be exactly the sort of attacking part that Pulis knows what to do with. A very good signing.

Weakness: The post-40-point blues. It’s the standing joke: as soon as a Pulis teams feels safe, their level of application falls through the floor. Last season, they didn’t win a single game between the middle of March and the end of May. That has to go, because as long as that mentality remains, the club are toughening their own glass ceiling.

West Ham

Strength: A growing maturity, seemingly. The difference in West Ham from a year ago is dramatic: there has been no shouting on social media, no look-at-us transfer culture and, a few errant tweets aside, very little negative PR. In its place has risen a calm, strategic approach to the transfer market which has systematically allowed the curing of long-standing weaknesses.

A new goalscorer, a much better goalkeeper, plus two strong Premier League performers in Marko Arnautovic and Pablo Zabaleta. For once, West Ham’s strength has been their recruitment.

Marko Arnautovic should prove a fine summer signing

Weakness: It’s an unfair point, because clubs can’t be expected to tackle every issue they have inside a single window, but the lack of depth is still a concern. An injury to Cheikh Kouyate would cause significant issues in midfield, for instance, as would the absence of Winston Reid in defence.

There’s a month of window left, so maybe West Ham are still pursuing players, but the peril of having a thin squad is an annual problem in the East End and staff shortages could well undermine another season if they’re unlucky.
